FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC, 8/26/17 - Office and Professional Employees International Union, AFL-CIO. (OPEIU) Local 2, a leading provider of services to more than 6,000 working people in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and proponent of protecting and improving conditions in the jobs and in lives of members in over 100 shops, is giving back to the community with a donation of school supplies to under-privileged students in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
Starting school with the proper school supplies promotes learning and helps keep kids in school! Since our inception we have negotiated and enforced contracts, lobbied legislatures and Congress, and trained union leaders and members. And, we constantly work to defend our members' rights. It's only natural that we take an interest in the education and development of the young minds which may become our future members! So, for the first time ever, we are coordinating a School Supply Drive!
We need your help to make this inaugural event a success! Would you please coordinate with your co-workers, friends and family to help make our School Supply Drive a success? You can bring your donations of K-12 School Supplies to our Drop Box at our Member Appreciation Summer BBQ or email [email protected] to schedule a pickup. Can we count on you?
We will have updates and pictures to share in the near future! Stay tuned for more OPEIU Local 2 - Members Working to Impacting our Communities stories coming soon!

Based on the median earnings of all full-time, year-round workers in 2015, women now make 79.6 cents for every dollar men make, a change from 78.6 cents the previous year. Women’s earnings in 2015 were $40,742, while men’s were $51,212. Rounding off the figures shows women’s earnings now at 80 percent of men’s, compared to 79 percent last year.”

Racial Justice Brainstorming Meeting
March 17, 2017
The Local 2 Racial Justice Working Group met last week to welcome new members and plan the direction for the Local in 2017. The meeting included members from SEIU, AFT, APWU, WMATA and others. The group will focus on the unique challenges facing people of color and allies in the workplace and the labor movement, the impact of the Black Lives Matter Movement on the fight for collective change and how Local 2 can be a part of the discussion of racial justice in our shops.
There were a lot of new faces and great ideas exchanged. The group wanted to focus on holding different racial justice events, such as a special viewing of the movie "13; and developing material that will assist other shops in having difficult race conversation; and continue to include racial justice conversations at the OPEIU Local 2 Executive Board meetings. This active and highly motivated group wants to hold monthly meetings to continue planning and expanding on ideas.
Thanks to the support of the Local 2 leadership racial justice has become a priority for our union. If you would like to join us, please email Caniesha Washington at [email protected]. Keep your eyes open for the next meeting of the Racial Justice Working Group!

Greetings Brothers and Sisters of Local 2:
Shop Steward Training: On Saturday, February 25, forty-six stewards attended the Local 2 Shop Steward training held at the American Federation of Teacher, located in Washington, D.C.
After teaching a brief section on how to investigate, write and file a grievance, I turned it over to OPEIU International President Richard Lanigan. The training was divided into two sections: the first dealing with discipline and discharge and the second on handling past practice. Our shop steward class was an all-day event from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., both topics where covered heavily in great detail.
It was clear to all in attendance, our International President Lanigan has spent a lot of time researching and refining the subjects’ matters. His deliverance during the class, was intuitive, he spoke in a way that was both instructive and entertaining. Out of the 46 stewards that were present at the start of the program, all but 1 where still engaged at the end. Reflects why I speak highly of our International President Richard Lanigan. Local 2 and I look forward to planning our next stewards training and will always welcome our OPEIU International President Richard Lanigan to future steward training at Local 2’s.
Negotiations in Progress: Contracts that are open and being negotiated include: International Union of Operating Engineers, WMATA, International Association of Fire Fighters, United Food and Commercial Workers, and the American Federation of Government Employees. The open contracts cover close to 1,300 Local 2 members. Contracts that have been recently completed and ratified by the membership include: the Fairfax Connector, Union Privilege, the National Football League Players Association and the D.C. Circulator.
Upcoming events include: The Local 2 next membership meeting is on Tuesday, April 4th, which will include the installation of the newly elected officers.

Stewards Training, What's That All About?
Did you know that every shop steward job plays a critical role in the union and at Local 2. The shop steward's job is a vital key for every bargaining unit’s success!
Did you know a must have ‘tool’ for a great shop steward is being able to communicate with the shop members, as well as with OPEIU Local 2 officers and staff. OPEIU Local 2 and our members have devised various methods of maintaining and protecting our Union environment. Some shops have regularly scheduled meetings, or quarterly. Other shops communicate via a shop newsletter and/or personal e-mails. Remember, every shop steward must maintain communication at all levels.
Did you know, twice a year OPEIU Local 2 conducts steward training for the membership. Local 2’s steward training is an all-day affair (lunch provided). Starts with an orientation –followed up with training on matters such as how to solve problems in your shops first hand. How to file a grievance and what does the term ‘just cause’ have to do with it!
Wrapping up with why, your role as the shop steward purpose is serving the membership, as the on-site representatives of OPEIU Local 2.
Next Steward's Training: Sat., February 25, 2017, 9 AM - 5 PM
Location: American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO
Address: 555 New Jersey Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20001
Nearest Metro: Union Station & Metered Street Parking Is Available

OPEIU Local 2 Members at AFGE Pickets AFGE's Legislative Conference
Thursday, February 9, 2017
60 OPEIU Local 2 members stood up to American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) management after their anti-union bargaining team tried to impose contract language that would remove the workers' right to a weekend, gut the grievance procedure, limit the union’s ability to represent their members and give management the right to unilaterally extend probationary periods. They are also refusing to meaningfully bargain over paid parental leave, outsourcing of union work, and rising health care costs.
AFGE members joined OPEIU Local 2 activists from AFGE, AFT, Teamsters, Solidarity Center, SEIU, and IBEW in the protest. The support from AFGE members for the AFGE staff was amazing. They rallied, marched and chanted in a true show of solidarity.
OPEIU is fighting for a fair contract and is demanding that AFGE negotiate a fair deal for their staff.
