WELCOME New Staff Rep. Michael Spiller
Mike began his Union career as a shop steward at the Maryland House of Corrections for the Maryland Correctional Union/AFT, moved on to be elected the statewide Executive Vice President and then a labor representative for the local. While serving on staff, he organized the local from 600 members to 1462 members in two years. Three years later, he was hired on as northeast region project staff for the national AFT, where he helped to organize two state employees locals, MPEC and AFT Healthcare Maryland. Shortly later, he served on project staff as an organizer, and worked for AFT-Maryland, the state federation of AFT as a field staff representative.
"I spent the past 17 years strengthening Maryland locals and hard working families. I became the chief negotiator for AFT-MD negotiating contracts with Baltimore County government," he said. "During that time I coordinated multiple political campaigns as the Baltimore coordinator for the AFL-CIO Maryland/DC, and during my time at AFT-MD, I served as the steward for my staff local, OPEIU Local 2, negotiating our contract for the past 10 years. As I start working with OPEIU, local 2, I look forward to doing some great work for this new membership of working families."
"I am married to my college sweetheart, Angela Spiller for 29 years and we have two daughters, Mikiaila (Noel), 27 and Ebony, 22. I currently reside in Randallstown, Maryland.. The people I've met along the way will forever be a part of my life. Praising the Lord for opening a new door of opportunity for me to grow in. At OPEIU, local 2, I look forward to doing some great work for this new membership of working families."

What Does This Have to Do With Women?
The Women’s Common Sense Economics workshop helps participants understand the economic inequalities that exist for women. Participants will be able to share with others their experiences with the economy and identify the political and economic agendas that hurt women. They will also learn how working people can change the economy’s direction and impact public policy choices through mobilization (voting, volunteering and activism), as well as how to empower their co-workers, family and friends to engage in relevant campaigns that help women.
