Justice in Policing Act A Start, But We Must Do More


A message from our International: ​The House-passed Justice in Policing Act of 2020 is a solid first step toward real justice for Black Americans targeted by police brutality. Its provisions – including the banning of chokeholds and no-knock warrants, the creation of a national police misconduct database, and eliminating qualified immunity for law enforcement – are necessary and welcomed. Still, we must do more than simply change the way the law is enforced if we are truly invested in justice for Black Americans.

LGBTQ+ Workers Gain Workplace Protections in Landmark Supreme Court Decision

Yesterday, a landmark decision out of the Supreme Court guaranteed workplace protections for LGBTQ+ workers across the nation! Prior, only about half of the states had laws that protect LGBTQ+ workers from workplace discrimination. Happy Pride to all of our members as we celebrate this measure of progress!

The officers of OPEIU Local 2 share the deep sadness and fear expressed by Black people in America this weekend. The lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery were not the first Black lives violently taken from their families and communities, and it is incumbent upon us all to take conscious steps to dismantle the racist systems that permeate America and its institutions.
