Get to Know OPEIU Local 2’s LGBTQIA+ Committee!

Did you know that OPEIU Local 2 has a committee specifically focused on issues impacting workers that identify within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other gender and sexual orientation expansive communities?

OPEIU Local 2’s LGBTQIA+ Committee was rebooted a few years ago and looks to continue its work within the Local. Union members who care about these issues or who are just looking for other LGBTQIA+ folx to chat with within the Local are encouraged to reach out to committee chair, Chelsea Bland, to learn more about how to get involved. Shop Steward Virtual Education Forum - Join us on Feb. 17!

Join the Education Committee on February 17 at 5:30 PM EST for our Local 2 Shop Stewards Education Forum. Being a shop steward isn't an easy job, but it's only with the support of stewards that unions can flourish.

This forum will be an opportunity to learn from other shop stewards, share problems you've encountered and offer potential solutions, with input from your peer shop stewards and Local 2 staff representatives. The Forum will be held via Zoom - make sure to register at the link below!

LGBTQIA+ Trivia Night!

Join your union siblings for a fun night of trivia! In honor of LGBTQIA+ History month OPEIU Local 2 is hosting a night of trivia. This is a great opportunity to connect with other Local 2 members, test your knowledge and learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community. OPEIU Local 2 LGBTQIA+ Committee Chair Chelsea Bland will lead us in an hour of trivia and the winner will receive a prize! Everyone is welcome to join! Don't worry if you don't know much about LGBTQIA+ history! This will be a fun, light-hearted game night with an opportunity to learn something new.

President's Report: 2017 Summary & 2018 Plans

Looking ahead, 2018 looks to be a very challenging year. The United States Supreme Court will soon decide the case known as Janus vs AFSCME, which could affect the entire labor movement. Combining this with a White House and Congress controlled by a very conservative Republican party, Labor will have to fight to survive. Local 2 has prepared with a combination of shop steward training, organizing, and improved communications with our members.

Racial Justice Brainstorming Meeting

The Local 2 Racial Justice Working Group met last week to welcome new members and plan the direction for the Local in 2017. The meeting included members from SEIU, AFT, APWU, WMATA and others. The group will focus on the unique challenges facing people of color and allies in the workplace and the labor movement, the impact of the Black Lives Matter Movement on the fight for collective change and how Local 2 can be a part of the discussion of racial justice in our shops.
