On behalf of the OPEIU Local 2 Social Justice Committee, we wanted to share information about several exciting in-person and virtual events happening in DC this weekend and next (August 22-28). Join us in showing labor's support for voting rights by attending one of these online or in-person events!

If you would like to meet up with Social Justice Committee members to attend the annual March on Washington, fill out the Google Form below!

Tomorrow → NAACP's "Fighting for Our Vote" Campaign Launch, Co-Sponsored by the AFL-CIO, AFT, and AFSCME

Labor will join the Fight for Our Vote coalition to kick off their year-long campaign in support of voting rights. Securing voting rights is central to our labor work as we mobilize to save our democracy for future generations.

Speakers at the DC event include AFL-CIO Acting President and Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler and AFSCME President Lee Saunders. The DC rally will take place this Saturday, August 21, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM ET. The event is happening at Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill (East Capitol Street NE; between 11th and 13th Streets).

The speaking program begins at 2:00 p.m. ET. We urge all members who are interested in attending to wear masks and observe recommended local COVID-19 protocols.

Next Weekend → The Annual March on Washington, "March on for Voting Rights"
Additionally, we are sharing a Google Form to fill out if you would like to attend the March on Washington as a group with other OPEIU members. The Social Justice Committee will contact you to identify a meet-up spot, and again all participants should wear masks and observe local COVID-19 protocols.

The in-person march, this year's theme being "March On for Voting Rights," is happening Saturday, August 28, between 8 AM - 3 PM ET. Those attending the in-person event will gather at 8 AM at McPherson Square Park at 15th St., NW, and H Street, and the event will kick off at 9:45 AM, marching from McPherson Square past Black Lives Matter Plaza, passing the White House and Washington Monument.

March On for Voting Rights is a nonviolent, nonpartisan mass mobilization to demand that elected officials protect democracy, denounce voter suppression and ensure fair, easy access to the vote for all through the passage of comprehensive federal legislation. On August 28, the 58th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic March on Washington, we will march on cities across America to demand that the vision of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech be deferred no longer.

To RSVP, please fill out this Google Form.

Tomorrow Through Next Weekend → "March On for Voting Rights" Virtual Events

There are number of incredible virtual events that will begin Sunday, August 22nd and conclude on Saturday, August 28th. These events include the Indigenous Leaders Roundtable, Deep Dive into Voting Right Bills and Their Impact, Black Women Townhall, Latinx Activist Roundtable, Mural Unveiling and Sign Making Virtual Party, and more.

To find virtual events please visit https://marchonforvotingrights.org/.
