OPEIU Local 2 President Dan Dyer gives an update on some of the Local's recent activities: a packed shop steward training, upcoming contract negotiations, and upcoming events. 

Shop Steward Training: On Saturday, February 25, forty-six stewards attended the Local 2 Shop Steward training held at the American Federation of Teacher, located in Washington, D.C. 

After teaching a brief section on how to investigate, write and file a grievance, I turned it over to OPEIU International President Richard Lanigan.  The training was divided into two sections: the first dealing with discipline and discharge and the second on handling past practice.  Our shop steward class was an all-day event from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., both topics where covered heavily in great detail. 

​It was clear to all in attendance, our International President Lanigan has spent a lot of time researching and refining the subjects’ matters. His deliverance during the class, was intuitive, he spoke in a way that was both instructive and entertaining.  Out of the 46 stewards that were present at the start of the program, all but 1 where still engaged at the end. Reflects why I speak highly of our International President Richard Lanigan. Local 2 and I look forward to planning our next stewards training and will always welcome our OPEIU International President Richard Lanigan to future steward training at Local 2’s.  

Negotiations in Progress:  Contracts that are open and being negotiated include: International Union of Operating Engineers, WMATA, International Association of Fire Fighters, United Food and Commercial Workers, and the American Federation of Government Employees.  The open contracts cover close to 1,300 Local 2 members.  Contracts that have been recently completed and ratified by the membership include: the Fairfax Connector, Union Privilege, the National Football League Players Association and the D.C. Circulator. 

Upcoming events include:  The Local 2 next membership meeting is on Tuesday, April 4th,  which will include the installation of the newly elected officers.
